When is the best season to visit Kyoto? Japan is known for its distinctive season, and Kyoto's temperature is even more extreme. Surrounded by valleys on three sides, Kyoto is hot and humid in the summer and cold in the winter.

Best Season to Visit Kyoto

Spring (March to May): Kyoto offers a moderate temperature in spring. Beginning in mid March, the city starts to warm up, providing an optimal temperature for flowers to bloom.  Various plants and flowers become vivid, and among the most noticeable are the cherry blossom, plum blossom, Rhododendron, Wisteria, and Iris. Undoubtedly, the cherry blossom is the favorite of both the locals and the travelers, so spring is the best time to visit Kyoto(March to May).

Tsuyu Season (June to July)
From June to mid July is the rainy season in Kyoto. More properly, the local Japanese use the term Tsuyu to describe the season.  During the Tsuyu season, Kyoto would be very humid and the temperature tends to fluctuate. If you want to keep yourself dry, there are many museums offered in Kyoto, including the Kyoto Aquarium where you can meet numerous marine creatures you have never seen and the Kyoto International Manga museum where you learn about an extensive collection of comic books.

Summer (July to August)
The mountains on the three sides of the Kyoto block most of the wind, thus summer day can hardly cool down.  In those couple months, the temperature will remain hot and humid, and it is not unusual to find temperature rising to 35C (or 95F) on a summer day. Additionally, it is common for unexpected storms to visit the city.

Fall (September to November)
Similar to spring, fall is mild and sunny, thus another perfect season to visit Kyoto. October is still very warm, but the temperature will start to drop in November. As the temperature cools down, maples leaves will turn bright red, decorating the city into a picturesque tourist attraction. Maples leaves can be widely found as you visit temples. Because nights in fall are not too cold, most temples would keep the door open for the colorful night view.

Winter (December to February)
Is winter the worst season to visit Kyoto? The mountains surrounding Kyoto would bring cold currents to the city. Despite the cold temperature, it rarely snows in Kyoto. However, if you are lucky enough to see snow in Kyoto, make sure you take pictures of this beautiful ancient town covered in snow. Staying in a traditional ryokan for a hot bath is also a recommended experience during a winter visit.
