Fish traders operated in the area unofficially since the 1820s, until the market was established. It was also nicknamed Kuromon Ichiba or Black Gate Market for its black painted gate that was destroyed by a massive fire in 1912.

Access to Kuromon Ichiba is a 3-minute walk from the Nippombashi Subway Station where hours are varied by stores, typically between 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. It is recommended to go early in the morning when there are fewer people, watching the shops opened and preparing their stalls. For more information, there is a tourist information building towards the south side of the street providing useful information and maps, and other services. There is a seating area at the information center to enjoy your meal.
