Great Buddha of Kamakura

Looking for a tour to the Great Buddha of Kamakura? How to get to the Great Buddha of Kamakura? Kamakura Daibutsu, also known as the Great Buddha of Kamakura is an outdoor bronze statue of Amida Buddha sitting in the gesture of meditation. It is located in Kotokuin Temple in Kamakura of Japan. It is the second tallest bronze Buddha statue in Japan following the world's largest bronze Buddha statue, Nara Daibutsu. The Kamakura Daibutsu stands at a height of 11.4 meters weighing at 121 tons. Amongst the large statues of Buddha in Japan, the fact that it sits in the open air makes it unusual.

It was originally cast in 1252 and located inside a large temple hall, but due to unfortunate events of typhoons and a tsunami, it was destroyed multiple times in the 14th and 15th centuries. Since the 15th century, the Buddha has been standing outside in the open air. The whole statue was once covered thinly in gold leaf, but the only traces left of gold leaf is near the statue's ear. The statue is hollow where visitors can visit the interior for a small donation of 20 yen. You can stand inside the sacred monument and how it was casted from the inside.

As the highlight is the Great Buddha itself, there is more to offer on the temple grounds, like the pair of 1.8 meter-long warazori straw sandals hang to the right of the Buddha. It is originally woven by children in 1951 in the hope that the Buddha would use them to walk the length and breadth of Japan. The Nio-mon gate may also be a site of interest, which is the richly colored entrance where the two temples protect Deva kings reside.
