JCII Camera Museum

Things to Do in Tokyo 534
JCII Camera Museum

JCII Camera Museum was established in 1954, the full name of JCII is Japan Camera and Optical Instruments Inspection and Testing Institute. The goal of the museum is to ensure all the photographic equipment exported from Japan meets the quality requirements. Responsible for testing the quality of camera products, this company came across classic models of various brands of cameras. To record these cameras in the history, the museum began to collect various models since 1969. After more than 40 years of accumulation, the museum now has many camera models. If you have any Japanese lens launched before the 1980s, most likely you will find the logo of JCII. With the improvement on quality control level of each factory, JCII has gradually withdrawn from the role of QC since the 1980s.  The JCII Camera Museum established in 1989 has been open to the public to display many models.

Although not particularly large (only 310 square meters), the museum is divided into two regions. One region is the regular exhibition hall displaying many classic models and the other is a special exhibition hall, which usually last for four months. With more than 4,900 cameras made in Japan alone, the collection of photographic equipment is extensive. Also, different special exhibitions are held from time to time, thus the museum is very interesting. The main collections include traditional cameras as well as modern digital cameras, including the world's first camera "Giroux Daguerreotype Camera" produced on August 19, 1839, Japan's first camera made in 1854, the first Hansa launched in 1936 by Canon and Nikon, the first Nikon 1, and the first Nikonmat Nikkormat EL with automatic exposure control.

In addition to its own collection of cameras, the museum also regularly displays old models from around the world. For example, in the British Camera Show, there were about 200 pieces of antique British cameras from the 19th to the 20th century, including the shooting device used by the British inventors William Henry Fox Talbot in 1834.
