The Sounkyo Hot Spring Ice Waterfall Festival is a festival held between late January and late March. This festival has a lively atmosphere where ice and light collide. There are ice sculptures, giant slides, ice bars, ice shrine, and other features, and at night are illuminated making it an area with magical lights, along with fireworks.
Obako is a beautiful rock formation along the river spanning about 6 kilometers. There are volcanic rocks you can see up close. It is said to be the most beautiful place of the gorge, with features of wide, giant rock wall of columnar joins line up to resemble byobu, which are folding screens.
Located on Mount Kurodake, there is a ropeway and lift that runs from the Sounkyo Onsen to the 7th station on Kurodake at an altitude of 1,520 meters, providing easier access into the higher parts of the park. You can get a magnificent view of Mount Daisetsu-zan. In July and August, alpine plants are growing all over making it particularly beautiful.

How much does the ropeway cost in Sounkyo Valley?There are two segments of the ropeway. In the first segment, you will be transferred in a large ropeway cabin to 5th station Kurodake. The ropeway segments can be purchased together or separately.

Is the Sounkyo Valley Frozen Waterfall worth visiting?The Frozen Waterfall opens 10:00-22:00 with an admission ticket at 300 Yen/person. You can get a drink with the ticket. Night time firework show stars at 20:30PM. It could be very cold at night so bring enough clothes to keep warm!

If I want to hike to the top of the mountain, what are some advices?There are two trails in the Sounkyo Valley, and one of them is to the Kurodake. There are three sections of the trails. In the first section, you will take ropeway to the 5th station. Round trip ticket cost 1850 yens and takes about 7 minute for a one way trip. You may stay around 20-30minutes to check out the scenery. Afterward, hop on a chairlift to the 7th station. Round trip ticket cost 600 yens and takes about 15 minute for a one way trip. You will see a observatory station once arrived. It will take another 90 minutes to climb all the way to the top of the mountain.
