Shinsaibashi Shopping Tours

Want a shopping tour to Shinsaibashi? An iconic symbol of Osaka, Shinsaibashi is the most well-known shopping district in the heart of the city. Dated back to the Edo period, the shopping district has a history of 380 years. Today, it is still a lively neighborhood crowded with people of all ages. Shinsaibashi-suji stretches from the central Osaka to the east of Mido-suji Avenue. On this 600-meter-long shopping street, there are kimono shops, Western clothing, footwear retailers, jewelry shops, fashion apparel shops, and various restaurants. Many people like to spend their leisure time here. However, the Shinsaibashi shopping area usually refers to Mido-suji west side of the Shinsaibashi Station, and the American Village, which is known for fashionable high-end brand specialty store and coffee shops.

The Shinsaibashi Bridge used to be a bridge across the Nagahorikawa River, built in the 8th year of Yuanhe (1622). At that time, Shinsaibashi was a wooden bridge approximately 35 meters long and 4 meters wide. It transformed into an iron bridge in the 6th year of Meiji (1873), which was a rare structure in Japan at that time. In the 42nd year of Meiji (1909), the Shinsaibashi was renovated with stone. In the Showa 39 (1964) period, the bridge was relocated because the Nagori River was filled. The original Shinsaibashi was recognized as the top 100 bridges in Japan.
