Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum

Ryuhyo translates to drift ice in English, which are blocks of ice that are carried by the winds and sea currents in colder climates. Located in eastern Hokkaido, the Okhotsk coastline is the only place in Japan where you can see drift ice in the southernmost point of the northern hemisphere.

The Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum provides visitors with arctic experiences, learning about drift ice and the sea animals of the Sea of Okhotsk. Inside the museum houses a permanent display of drift ice, with a room that offers a simulated drift ice experience. The room is set to -15 degrees C, and you can touch and feel the drift ice yourself. Visitors are also able to try spinning a damn towel which becomes frozen solid within a few seconds.
