Hakone Komagatake Ropeway

The Hakone Komagatake Ropeway is the highest aerial tramway in Japan, and features Japan's largest elevation gain and Japan's highest ropeway station as of 2021. The ropeway runs from the shore of Lake Ashinoko to the summit of Mount Komagatake, and covers a distance of 1783 meters in 7 minutes. The Komagatake Ropeway is a popular and relaxing way to see Mt.Fuji, Lake Ashinoko, and the so-called Nagano Alps. Going up at a steep angle, a grand landscape opens up in front of your eyes. You will also be able to visit the Hakone Mototsumiya Shrine on the summit which is the original Hakone Shrine before the main buildings have been moved down to the shore of Lake Ashinoko.

Confusion between Hakone Ropeway and Komagatake Ropeway
There are two ropeways in Hakone, the Hakone Ropeway and the Komagatake Ropeway. The Hakone Ropeway offers access to and from Lake Ashinoko, and running from Togendai Station to Sounzan Station, the highest station is Owakudani. The Komagatake Ropeway operates between Lake Ashinoko and the peak of Mount Komagatake. Unlike the Hakone Ropeway which operates smaller cabins, the Komagatake Ropeway has a much larger cabin that departs every 20 minutes. If you have time, you can take a hike from the peak of Mount Komagatake toward Owakudani Station of the Hakone Ropeway via the sacred mountain,This hiking route takes about 2.5 hours, and a total length of 4km. But it is strongly recommended to check the warnings of volcanic activity beforehand.

Shirabidaira Station and Senjojiki Station
The departure station of Komagatake Ropeway is called Shirabidaira because it was built in the middle of a forest of silver-fir (called Shirabiso in Japanese). The Shirabidaira station is at an elevation of 1,662 meters, in this way, the altitude difference between the Shirabidaira station and the peak Senjojiki Station is 950 meters, this elevation is the largest of any ropeway in Japan. From the platform of Senjojiki Station, visitors can see the Alps and Mt. Fuji, or you can wander to the Hakone Motostumiya Shrine. The Hotel Senjojiki is located next to Senjojiki Station on the peak, it has a restaurant, a souvenirs shop and Cafe, you can even experience bathing in soft natural water in the public bathhouse of Japan's highest alpine hotel.
